Patient Care - What to expect when coming into Fairfield Hospital

If you have never stayed in hospital before you may not know what to expect. Although the process may vary according to specialty and type of procedure, generally the following steps apply:

GP Referral - Your GP will usually carry out an initial diagnosis and provide you with a referral for an Outpatient consultation.

Outpatient Consultation - You will be seen by one of our Consultants at a time that is convenient for you. The Consultant will carry out an examination and may request that you have tests or investigations such as; pathology (blood test), X-ray including MRI or CT scan here on site. The Consultant may also advise clinical treatment, physiotherapy or admission to the hospital.

Prior to Admission - You may be required to attend a pre-admission assessment clinic, or receive a pre-assessment telephone call from a nurse requesting some health details. If admission to hospital is agreed, you will be given an Admission date with details explaining what will happen and what you need to bring into hospital.

Post-Treatment appointment - After treatment your Consultant may request a follow-up appointment to review your progress and outcome of the treatment. This may be arranged during your stay or sent by post.

Some physiotherapy and cosmetic skin treatments may not even require a GP referral, just phone 01744 746425 for an appointment or just for advice.

**Please remember that if you have private medical insurance you must contact your insurer to check that your cover is adequate, and to obtain authorisation**
