What is Hydrodilatation?

Hydrodilatation or arthrographic distension, is a minimally invasive treatment for frozen shoulder, where a solution is injected, using x-ray guidance, to stretch the joint capsule.

What are some benefits of Hydrodilatation?

Hydrodilatation is felt to provide benefit via two mechanisms:

  • Manual stretching of the capsule and thus disruption of adhesions which are characteristics of Frozen Shoulder.
  • Cortisone provides a potent anti-inflammatory effect and thus prevents further adhesion recurrence.

What are the risks of Hydrodilatation?

The risks associated with this particular type of treatment are low and sometimes it can be considered as an alternative to surgical arthroscopic capsular release.

Before considering medical treatment, it is important to be aware that all medical treatments carry a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand the risks involved with hydrodilation.
