Private Earwax Removal

Our Consultant ENT Surgeons have set up a one-stop earwax removal clinic here at Fairfield Independent Hospital.

The service provides direct access to micro-suction earwax removal performed by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultant.

Self-pay micro-suction clearance is from £150 per treatment for new and follow up attendances .

These fees include both ears, and up to two attempts. This appointment is for strictly earwax removal only, and this appointment does not include or require an initial consultation.

To book the appointment, you do not necessarily require a GP referral. However, it is important that a doctor or nurse has previously diagnosed that you would benefit from the procedure.

Why Micro-suction Earwax Removal?

Micro-suction earwax removal is generally considered if other methods have failed such as ear irrigation or syringing.

Using a microscope and a medical suction device, micro-suction earwax removal allows the Consultant to remove the earwax from the ear canal gently.

Only ENT Consultants perform micro-suction earwax removal here at Fairfield Independent Hospital which means your procedure is performed by a Consultant with the relevant training and expertise.

Micro-suction earwax removal procedure requires no liquids. As a result, there is no fuss or mess during the procedure.

Unlike ear syringing and ear irrigation, Micro-suction earwax removal is considered safe for people who have a perforated eardrum or mastoid cavity.

Before Earwax Removal?

Before you attend for your procedure, our ENT Consultants advise that patients use 2-3 drops of olive oil daily for up to seven days, to loosen any impacted wax. This will increase the chances of removing the earwax on the first attempt. More information about using olive oil you can visit the British Tinnitus Association Website https://www.tinnitus.org.uk/ear-wax

Micro-suction earwax removal is generally regarded as a safe and well-tolerated procedure. However, it is important to be aware that all medical procedures carry a certain amount of risk and it is important that you understand the risks before you consider micro-suction earwax removal. The ENT Consultant will advise you of the risks before you proceed with the treatment.

During Earwax Removal?

The procedure usually lasts for only a couple of minutes.

The Consultant will use a microscope and a medical suction device, which allows the specialist to remove the earwax from the ear canal.

In the unlikely event that the consultant is unable to remove the impacted earwax in the first attempt, they will advise the patient to use olive oil for a couple of days and return to repeat the procedure within 7-10 days. This is included in the price, and there is no additional fee.

If the during the procedure the consultant feels there may be other issues they will write to your GP to inform them.

After Earwax Removal?

Afterwards, the Consultant will advise patients to refrain from removing earwax or cleaning their ears by inserting small objects such as cotton wool buds, into the ear canal.

The consultant will write to your GP confirming that the procedure has taken place.

Unfortunately, for some patients, who suffer from chronic impacted earwax they may require the procedure repeating every couple of months.

Privately here at Fairfield independent Hospital, there are no waiting lists so you can choose a suitable time for you.

Each successful micro-suction clearance is charged £150 for new patients and £110 per treatment for patients who wish to attend for regular micro-suction earwax removal on a frequent basis. Patients who return for treatment after 12 months will be charged a new patient fee.

If you wish to book a private consultation to discuss other conditions or symptoms about your ears, nose or throat, then you will need to book a private consultation, which is charged separately. Private ENT consultations are from £150, and any follow-up consultations are from £100 each.
