What is Hernia Repair Surgery?
For open surgery, a general anaesthetic is used so you are asleep during the procedure, once it has taken effect, the surgeon makes a single incision over your hernia, usually about 6 to 8cm long. The surgeon then replaces the lump of fatty tissue or loop of the bowel back into your abdomen. A mesh is then placed in the abdominal wall where the hernia came through, to strengthen it. Your skin is then sealed with clips which are removed after 9-10 days.
For laparoscopic surgery, a general anaesthetic is used so you’ll be asleep during the operation. The surgeon will make 3 small incisions in your abdomen, a video scope is inserted through one, and surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions. There are then two ways to complete the procedure:
1) Transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) is where instruments are inserted through the muscle wall of your abdomen and the membrane that covers your abdominal organs (peritononeum). A flap of the peritoneum is peeled back and a piece of mesh is stapled or glued to the weakened area to strengthen it.
2) Totally extraperitoneal (TEP) involves repairing the hernia without entering the peritoneal cavity. After which, the incisions are sealed with stitches or surgical glue.
Is Hernia Repair a major surgery?
Hernia repair surgery is classed as a major surgery, however, the commonality of the surgery means the procedure is fairly quick to perform. Inguinal hernia repair can be carried out as either open surgery or laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery.
You will have instructions prior to the surgery, but the procedure typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, and you can leave the hospital on the same day.
Is mesh still used for Hernia Repair Surgery?
Since hernias can return easily, mesh is still used when it comes to hernia repair surgery. This strengthens the wall and stops the hernia from returning.
Is Hernia Repair Surgery painful?
It’s common to experience mild to moderate pain and feel a little run down after many major surgeries. After hernia repair surgery it’s also normal to feel twinges or pulling in the affected area whilst you heal.
How long is recovery after Hernia Repair Surgery?
Most people feel better within a few days of the surgery and much better after a week. You can return to all normal activities within two weeks of hernia repair surgery.
