Personal Profile

Dr Asish Bassi is a highly experienced consultant gastroenterologist with more than two decades of expertise in diagnosing and treating a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions. Based at Merseyside and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, he has been a trusted specialist since 2005, delivering advanced care to patients across the region.

His clinical practice focuses on luminal gastroenterology and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. Dr Bassi routinely performs procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), carrying out over 500 endoscopic procedures each year. He is also an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Dr Bassi has extensive expertise in complex endoscopic interventions, including the removal of large or challenging polyps, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) for polyps that might otherwise require surgery, dilatation of strictures in the oesophagus or bowel, PEG feeding tube placement and stent insertion for obstructing cancers. Alongside his work at Whiston Hospital, he provides advanced endoscopy services at Aintree University Hospital as a visiting consultant.

He offers comprehensive diagnosis and management for conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Coeliac disease, indigestion, acid reflux, anaemia, and chronic diarrhoea or constipation.

Dr Bassi trained at leading centres in Wales, London and Liverpool, and holds a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of Liverpool. He plays a vital role in bowel cancer prevention as part of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team. In addition, he serves as Clinical Lead for the Cheshire and Merseyside Endoscopy Network, NHSE/I Lead Endoscopy Advisor for the North West, and Deputy Medical Director at Merseyside and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Committed to advancing gastroenterology, Dr Bassi is actively involved in research focusing on pharmaco-economics and healthcare value optimisation.

He regularly presents at national and international conferences and contributes to education as an accredited endoscopy trainer and Royal College of Physicians Regional Advisor for the North West.
