Personal Profile
Dr Jennifer Yell is an experienced Consultant Dermatologist with an extensive background in both NHS and private practice. She graduated with MBChB with Honours in 1985, an accolade awarded to only nine out of 174 graduates. Following her initial training, she specialised in dermatology in Oxford and went on to complete an immunodermatology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, in 1994. This prestigious fellowship was awarded by the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council UK through a national competitive process. Dr Yell subsequently earned her Doctorate in Lupus Erythematosus in 1998, further cementing her expertise in complex dermatological conditions.
Dr Yell’s NHS career spanned over two decades, beginning in 1995 as a Consultant Dermatologist in the North West of England. She served at Salford and Wigan from 1995 to 2003, then at Salford and Trafford until 2013, and later at Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust until 2017. During this time, she held key leadership roles, including Trafford Skin Cancer Lead and Greater Manchester Dermatology Audit Lead, and contributed significantly to clinical governance and service development. Since 2018, Dr Yell has focused exclusively on private practice, offering patients expert care in a dedicated and personalised setting.
Her professional influence extends beyond clinical work. Dr Yell has held prominent positions within national and international dermatology organisations. She served as President of the North of England Dermatology Society (2017–2019) and was a long-standing member of the British Association of Dermatologists Clinical Services and Cancer Committee. She played a pivotal role in the British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease (BSSVD), serving as an inaugural committee member, Chairman, and later President from 2011 to 2018. Her international standing is reflected in her fellowship with the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease, where she served on the council for four years.
Dr Yell’s academic contributions are substantial. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, delivered more than 100 national and international presentations, and contributed chapters to leading dermatology textbooks. Her expertise has been sought by the media, including advisory roles for newspapers and television programmes such as Embarrassing Bodies. She has also served on editorial boards and training committees, shaping the future of dermatology education and practice.
