Mr Matthew Kent is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and has been able to work exclusively in shoulder and elbow surgery for many years.
Mr Kent qualified from Liverpool University in 1999 and later moved to Cambridge to complete his training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Following this he chose to return to Liverpool to undertake the prestigious shoulder and elbow fellowship in a centre recognised for its excellence in this area. After finishing the fellowship, he was honoured to be appointed to a consultant post with the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit.
It is his ambition to keep Liverpool at the forefront of advances in shoulder and elbow surgery. In recognition of this, Mr Kent was awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society travelling fellowship in 2013. This allowed him to spend time at several specialist centres in the USA, bringing back new techniques and advances to Liverpool. He has been able to continue to visit other centres across Europe and the USA since.
Research is key to the development of safe shoulder and elbow surgery. Mr Kent has published several research articles relating to shoulder and elbow surgery. He has also been the principal investigator at the Liverpool site for four national studies and one international study relating to trauma care, frozen shoulder, shoulder replacement and rotator cuff surgery.
Mr Kent remains active with teaching. He is regularly invited to present at both national and international meetings. He ran the Liverpool Shoulder Masters Course series over a three-year period and became president of the North West Upper Limb Group from 2014 – 2017. He is currently a member of the educational committee for the British Elbow and Shoulder society
Mr Kent aims to provide personalised treatments with all investigation and treatment decisions made based on individual circumstances. He believes that the treatment of most shoulder and elbow conditions should be team based with physiotherapy forming an important role in treatment and recovery.
