Mr Sajjad Ahmad is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specific expertise in managing diseases of the front of the eye: cornea, cataract and refractive, and external eye diseases (for example dry eye disease and allergic eye disease).
Mr Ahmad has pioneered the development of stem cell treatments for the front of the eye and ocular surface reconstruction within the UK. He acts as an adviser to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and European Medicines Agency for the further development of these novel treatments. He has a laboratory based research group in stem cell biology and has multiple national and international collaborators.
Mr Ahmad is originally from Newcastle where he did his early Ophthalmology training. He went on to do his Corneal Fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and St Paul’s Eye Unit (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), where he holds his Consultant appointment. He was awarded a US-UK Collaboration Award in 2008 to undertake a sabbatical period at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, USA.
